Why does Martial Arts Help Develop Self-Discipline?

Practicing martial arts is an excellent way to gain physical health and learn self-defense. The most significant benefit, though, is mental training. Proper martial arts training involves mental discipline. Isn’t self-discipline the result of mental training? Absolutely! Mental training builds qualities and life skills. For example, people gain confidence and focus. Also, people learn respect and many other attributes.

The Structured Environment of Martial Arts Training

Many people make New Year’s resolutions and join a gym, but they do not last. Why not? Why has this been a trend for millions of people for years? I can offer you a few reasons.

  1. If anyone achieves measurable results, there is no reason to stop. The lack of noticeable results could mean there is no expert help.
  2. Martial arts training always has an instructor in each class. Martial arts classes involve a lot of interaction, and interaction makes them more fun! Besides, all your classmates will become better friends, even like brothers/sisters.
  3. Everyone has heard that black belts are the highest-ranking belts. Beginners start with white belts and work their way up through several colors of belts. This has a very significant purpose. It is all about goal-setting skills and the process—the first skill to practice to experience success.

As you can see, two main differences will make it much easier to gain self-discipline: Professional instruction to get speedy results and interaction with the instructor and classmates during the training.

What is discipline? It is learning to change potential into ability.

Discipline comes from the word “disciple,” which means “follower or pupil.” Many people recall the 12 disciples of Jesus. What is the role of a follower or pupil? They are learning from the Master; that is their role. Discipline relates to learning, practice, and results. These results include mental character and physical skills. People are born with potential, not abilities. Learning changes potential into ability. Discipline is, therefore, in everyone’s best interest.

Why is Discipline So Hard?

The main reason is that our brains favor instant gratification over reaching goals that take time and require work. That is the exact reason why everyone needs training to be disciplined. The ultimate meaning of self-discipline is self-control, which is the last fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.” Everyone wants a better life, but everything costs something. What are we getting, and what price are we willing to pay? If we answer this question clearly, self-discipline doesn’t have to be so hard. For a clear picture, we want to have answers for:

  1. Motivation
  2. ROI (Return on Investment)

Motivation:

The word “motivation” has three parts: “motive,” “-ate,” and “-tion.” “Motive” means a reason to act. The suffix “-ate” means causing or providing. The suffix “-tion” means to make the noun. Motivation means “to provide a reason to act.” The proper purpose will provide enough energy to get things done. The purpose of self-discipline is to free oneself from the restrictions of life. These include temptation, evil desires, and poor choices. That is what Galatians 5:23 says. “No law will restrict you.” What a wonderful status to achieve! This is a good enough reason to do it! In Christianity, this journey is known as a pilgrimage or discipleship. I call it “Engineering the Human Soul.”

ROI (Return on Investment):

Would we reconsider buying an item if it has a high price? What are we paying for self-discipline? We pay with our time, effort, and money. No one wants to spend more time, effort, or money on the same item. Discipline is hard if one does not get a good ROI on their time, effort, and money. Discipline involves learning, so we must learn how to learn well. Good learning saves time, effort, and money. Then, discipline can be fun instead of hard.

Learning How To Learn Well:

Unfortunately, I have to write another article on this topic because it is a very complex process that can’t be covered in a few pages. I am looking forward to writing about this topic soon.

Conclusion

Martial Arts, as the words say, are human craftsmanship. It is a combined training method for body, mind, and spirit originating from the East. Martian Arts has a very rich history and tradition backed up by the Oriental Mind. It is the best self-discipline training method available to the public in modern times.
