How to build self-confidence
April 4, 2025

This topic is very popular on Google searches, which means many people are interested in learning about it. For some reason, how to build self-confidence seems to be lacking in the general public.
Why Isn’t Confidence Easy?
A puzzling thought is, “Why is such an essential life skill as Building Self-confidence not better known to the general public in this 21st century?” My answer is that because confidence is an emotional issue involving believing in one’s abilities, changing each individual’s emotions or feelings through another person’s logical explanation can be quite challenging.
The next question is, “Is it possible to change someone’s emotions to believing in their abilities through another person’s logical explanations?” My response is “100% Yes! It has happened too many times throughout history.” The next challenge for me is this: :”Can I make a system out of it, so that it can be done in a systematic manner and is not left to chance?”
The following story is how I made up a system for “How to build self-confidence.”
The general public still does not truly understand this, even in this 21st century, because it is a highly complex process. It hasn’t yet been explained exactly what the purpose and definition of confidence is. Why do we want self-confidence? Because the definition of confidence hasn’t been clearly defined, we have difficulty explaining how to build it. I want to let you know that I don’t apologize for not giving you a quick and easy answer to something that requires a substantial answer. I hope sincere readers will be more interested and enjoy a more profound and meaningful answer.
Definition of Confidence
To define confidence, we must understand precisely how the world is structured. That structure is formed by two elements: space and time. Space is the tangible, material world and time is the intangible meta-physical world.
When things happen in space, we call them events such as accomplishments or achievements. We call what happens in the time belt “tense”, which has past, present, and future. The past is always concrete, the present is ambiguous, and the future is always unknown.
In addition to space and time, life is an essential element in the structure of the world. Every life has an enormous amount of energy. As long as humans are alive, they must be doing something – that is human destiny. Life is so empty and unoccupied without any activities. No one can bear the emptiness and boredom. That is the drive we have instinctively. The irony is that nobody knows how to live a life before they live it. – but we have to live it now. At the same time, we have a fear of the unknown as well as the fear of failure for future events. That is why confidence is rare and not easy to gain.
If we summarize the above, we can see that confidence results from three elements working together:
1st: Events, accomplishments, or achievements that happen in space.
2nd: Tense, a time mode consisting of past, present, and future.
3rd: Entity: Human beings possess enormous energy. It is our power source.
When we deal with confidence, it is always limited to the future tense and future events (s) that haven’t happened yet. Since the future is unknown, everyone will be uncomfortable and fearful. However, every life possesses enormous energy to accomplish future events.
My definition of Self-Confidence is as follows:
“The Certainty of Future Events Formed in One’s Mind.”
The Purpose of Self-Confidence:
What is the purpose of self-confidence? This is another complicated and deep question that requires support from psychological, philosophical, and spiritual knowledge and understanding. It is a critical question to answer and get right. Without that critical answer, self-confidence can be used for the wrong purpose.
Alfred Korzybski (1879 – 1950) defined human life as a “Time Binder,” meaning that only humans can manage time; no other species can do this. The purpose of self-confidence is to utilize time to shape your future as you desire. Time cannot be stored or saved for later use; it must be used immediately. Your being is a store of time; how you choose to use it is entirely up to you. Since “Self-confidence is the certainty of future events formed in one’s mind,” whoever possesses self-confidence can shape their future any way they want it.
How to build self-confidence?
With all the explanations of self-confidence’s logic, definition, and purpose, I assure you that you can change your feelings about self-confidence.
1. Believing in yourself is the only way to live your life. How can you not believe in yourself? Naturally you may feel you don’t have enough skills or knowledge, but everyone comes into this world knowing nothing. If so, what do you think the next thing to prepare is?
2. Since everyone starts with no skills or knowledge, everyone relies on their life to determine what they will learn and at what speed. This is the reason everyone needs to “Learn How to Learn!” What is so strange about a lack of common sense (common sense is not common) in this world is that if learning is a skill, there are many different levels of learning. Shouldn’t we first learn what learning is and how to learn? These questions seem easy, yet they have deep roots to ponder. Countless young people experience learning as not easy and that it is more complicated than necessary.
3. You need to plan and think about what you want. I call this “making up your mind,” which is exercising your own free will. This is a compelling thing. Why aren’t people using their willpower faculty we already possess? Because we need to learn the skill of decision-making. That is the way we exercise making up (willpower) our minds.
4. Related to the third item, let your imagination soar. The sky’s the limit! What you can do and accomplish doesn’t have a boundary. Believe in humanity’s creativity. You are the one. Imagination is the starting point of creativeness.
5. You need to change your attitude toward all the mistakes you have made in the past and will assuredly make in the future. Think about this: What attitude do you hold toward the errors you have made and will make? Is it regret for mistakes made? Is it fear for errors you will make down the road?
What attitude should I hold for the mistakes I have made and will make? This question also requires deep psychological, philosophical, and spiritual knowledge and understanding and is another good item for a future, separate writing.
